The most innate and fundamental form of immunity in a multicellular organism is host cell death that destroys the replicative niche of pathogens before disease is established. There are multiple mechanisms that promote and execute host cell death – some beneficial to the host and some enhance disease pathogenesis. I will explore these mechanisms in the context of several infections from viruses to bacteria and provide evidence showing that harnessing particular host cell death pathways can mitigate disease.
